Stitches in Laid Work
Two More Methods

     Two more stitches from those which were originally reserved for embroidery on silk and velvet and are generally termed laid work. For a more comprehensive discussion, please see Plaited Stitch.

     Please Note: The needle in these graphics is shown for direction only. It is not recommended doing these stitches with a sewing method (shown) of embroidery. The stab method is more preferred. However, as with all embroidery endeavors, do what is comfortable for you.
Diagonal Laid Stitch Step 1

Upon the ground threads, lay diagonal threads about one-quarter inch (6 mm) or less apart.
Brick Pattern for Tying Threads

Take small stitches in a brick pattern over two of the diagonal threads as shown. This takes a bit of practise, but is not difficult.

Finished Example
 Center of flower is executed with this stitch. It has also been padded heavily with course cotton thread similar to worsted weight yarn.
Second Ground Detail
 A similar stitch. Threads are laid horizontally. Small stitches are placed every sixth stitch of the ground threads over one thread only. Each row is alternated to form a brick pattern. It can also be stitched as the diagonal pattern in example one above, over two horizontal rows.
